Alto to Tenor
Post Body

Hey everybody! I am an alto player and am getting into tenor slowly but surely. I have a question for tenor players: WHY do I feel so much resistance (from air flow through mouthpiece/neck to sound output) when playing tenor? I went to the music store (Sam Ash) and tried a few of their tenors in Orlando FL with these following brands Jean Baptiste (brand new), Yahama (idk which model but it was a lil older looking), and one other brand I can’t remember but it was a “super dynamic model.” On each of these saxes I played the normal student mouthpiece that came with it, and I’m wondering if that has to do with my issue or maybe I’m just so used to the function and technicalities of an alto that the tenor is just throwing me off and will take some getting used to. Anyone have any guidance suggestions? - the reed was fine- not too soft or hard so I know that wasn’t the issue. Is this feeling normal when playing tenor? Because I don’t feel that way at all with alto. I’m thinking maybe I’m overcompensating when it comes to embouchure as well - maybe I need to loosen up lol
