How can I know what I really desire?

I see a lot of "Indulgence posts" here, which I find great, but to indulge in the first place, you need to know what to indulge in, so it is satisfying for you.

For instance, I indulged in some specific sexual activity last night, which I thought I would like, but it turns out that I don't like it at all. So I was "indulging" for the sake of indulging itself, and not because it was truly something what I like.

So how can I separate between my own true desire and this pseudo-desire (which only comes up because I want to dive in into something as much as I can, not looking at whether I truly like it or not, but just doing it out of edginess and to be "extreme")?

I know, it's difficult for me to express what I am talking about, it's more about avoiding "you think you like something, you force yourself to indulge in it, turns out you don't like it at all". And in order to avoid that, how can I know whether I truly like something in the first place, and am not infatuated by something due to e.g. horniness, extreme hunger or some other circumstances?
