Context:
I'm located in Rapid View up near Meadow Lake. Currently we have SaskTel DSL directly wired to our house running at 10mbps download, 1mbps upload (but we only ever see 8mbps down/0.5mbps up). It's slow, but it's stable and rarely cuts out (generally it's a fault with our in home equipment when it does). We also have unlimited data which we love.
I do a bit of gaming and we stream all of our TV content since we dumped Shaw satellite service. We also have several smart home devices. Our internet is too slow to download during the day when we are using the internet and it's too slow for me to remote-play my PS5, or stream my own gameplay.
Last month, I was excited to see a SaskTel Fiber splicing trailer in our yard working on our line for about 2 hours. We didn't bother him, and he left. I've been asking SaskTel if we are going to see fiber service soon and they really don't know. Some agents say "yes, we are expanding" and others say "sorry, your community isn't on the list".
Additionally, they can't get our address to work on their service availability tool, it says no services available (it's never worked for me), but they see we have broadband service. "It must be a glitch!" they say.
SaskTel just announced Rapid View has been upgraded to 5G wireless coverage, so we suppose the trailer may have been adding lines to up the bandwidth of the tower 1km up the hill, and not installing fiber like I had hoped.
Is it worth it to switch to Starlink?, and how is the consistency?. I heard early on that it wasn't great for online gaming as it cuts for a short time as satellites shift in and out of sight. We also want unlimited data.
