Parents of Santa Cruz, how hard do you think it would be to relocate to Santa Cruz from the Central Valley?

I’m considering relocating to Santa Cruz or nearby but I know it’s pretty unrealistic. What sort of income is necessary to live in town with kids? Should I aim for Watsonville instead? Is that also unobtainable? I hate the heat here, and I miss the redwoods.
