San Francisco used to be the jewel of the US. I grew up in SF and used to adore it. But since moving back here in 2015 I’ve had my motorcycle stolen twice, had to replace the handlebars twice due to two other attempts to steal it, and have had the spark plugs broken off six times. This despite it being parked in a garage at home for 5 of the past 7 years, and I park in a parking garage at work.
I've had my trailer stolen. My Jeep Wrangler has had its window broken once, and the soft top has been slashed twice. Someone broke in to steal the back seat.
That’s 15 significant incidents just against my vehicles in 7 years, which is once every six months. I've been riding a motorcycle for 30 years, but I don’t even want to buy a new bike at this point since it’s just going to get stolen again before it's paid off.
And I put up with this for what? To live in an area where I can’t afford a house (I make more than enough to buy a house in any state other than CA), and feel broke all the time. Homelessness and property crime is out of control. Going out to eat costs twice what it would in any other part of the country. and we have horrific drought and forest fires every year. The quality of life here sucks and I’m paying a premium to wallow in it.
I would move if I didn't have a girlfriend who has deep roots here, but the first time I'm feeling like I may have to even though it means breaking up with her.
