Let me start off by saying that JP has some interesting views and I don't think he's some kind of evil guy(EDIT: I'm going through some of his stuff, and I actually respect his ideas in psychology and a many other things about him). I honestly hope JP would see this and comment his thoughts on this as well, so I don't mean this in any way of disrespect to him or his fans.
The thread I linked is a display of one of the main problems with JP's views. JP's audience and even JP himself attempt to interpret religious texts with the presumption that it contains some hidden 'truth' (whether they think it's based on reason, or consistent with their understanding of various fields in academia). But how are they checking if their interpretations are legitimate? Are these people experts in the various fields of academia required to make the claims they make? There are no comments attempting to check if what they're thinking is correct. It comes across as 'I feel it to be right, so it must be right. It just makes sense to me'.
Just a side note, but having spent some time in the JP subreddit, it seems he's attracted pseudo-christians that are still trying to justify their beliefs in the supernatural with JP's views. Just an honest observation.
