I started watching The Director and the Jedi behind the scenes documentary the other day. I've gone back and forth on TLJ. It's still not particularly high on my list of SW movies but I don't hate it the way I used to. It has issues imo but also has some very fun moments. But anyway, just a few thoughts from watching the documentary.

I've seen a lot of comments in places before about how RJ must not be a big fan, hates SW, or doesn't "get it". After watching the behind the scenes though I can't disagree more. Whatever you think of his story decisions, it's clear from his time/effort/energy he put into the movie that he does love SW. Seeing his giddy reactions to different things coming together is even more proof of that.

Mark Hamill is an absolute legend. He didn't like the direction Luke went, didn't agree at all with the choices, but after getting his thoughts out there he then put all of his ability into an amazing performance. Loved seeing those BTS shots of him on set, joking around, having fun, and just enjoying making the movie.

It was interesting to hear the thoughts about the DJ character and how he was supposed to make the audience feel similarities to Han and then be a surprise when he doesn't show a "heart of gold". While I really hate the phrase "subverting expectations", I think that's one case where I could say it was done well.

I can't say the BTS documentary gave me any greater appreciation for the movie. I'd say my feelings on it are still the same as they were before. Not great and by no means one of the top SW movies...but also not some steaming pile of garbage like some make it out to be. Need to watch the last bit of the documentary. I think I have maybe a half hour to go. But if you haven't seen it I'd say it's just always fun to see the making of a SW movie and it's worth checking out.
