I just read a discussion on r/mawinstallation that discussed Death Stars, Star Killer Base and some fleet of star destroyers from that third movie I haven't seen and don't plan to watch.
The scope of the Death Star was epic and scary to think about and I remember that it affected me watching Alderaan blow up as a child. Here's this huge, planet killer / troop carrier / fighter carrier that was fantastical but sort of frighteningly plausible. And it had some reasonable limitations (it had to travel to Yavin and slowly orbit the planet in order to target Yavin 4).
Contrast this with Star Kill base which can shoot (FTL We guess?) across the Galaxy (We guess?). JJ loses my suspension of disbelief every time he shows me a planet blowing up from the surface of another planet and every other stupid thing about his stupid movie jumps into my consciousness and I stop having fun. He's done it to me twice, and I want him to stop.
But beyond JJs dumb planets blow up cinematography, just the need to constantly escalate to a bigger superweapon and have that be the point of the film is just. . . did NO ONE during the whole process of making these movies ever say "Hey. . . what if we DIDN'T have a bigger scarier less plausible, less fleshed out version of the Death Star? What if we did something else?"
And was JJ like "No, let's just do what we always do!"
Anyway, I've said more than I need to about this. I think I got my whole point across with the title. Carry on singing the songs of our people.
tl;dr Starkiller Base dumb. Death Star Destoryers silly. Hulk not watch puny third movie.
