Title pretty much sums it up, but I'm exploring an opportunity with a direct competitor to take over as the GM of a regional branch. The industry is commercial/industrial HVAC, and I would have 3 sales guys, 8 technicians, 1 service manager, and 1 dispatcher as direct reports, but my "main" focus would be the development of the sales team. This comes with a significant increase in pay ($75KBase Commission currently to $125K Bonus), plus several other perks that I don't have now (company car, profit sharing, slightly better insurance, etc.).
I have 2 points that make me somewhat hesitant to take the role:
- I'm very comfortable where I am. I've led the company in sales essentially since I started here, and I've grossed north of $100K each of the past 3 years- not bad in Alabama. There are some fears of the unknown with this role, and my potential new company doesn't have the best reputation in the area. This could be a challenge that would be fun to overcome, or it could be a nightmare.
- One of the sales reps that I would be managing would be my little brother. He got into the industry because of what he saw me doing, but he has limited experience with HVAC and has been more or less set adrift to learn as he goes his first several months. I have no doubt that I could manage him and set him up for success, BUT..... what if it doesn't work out? Could I fire my kid brother for non-performance? Ouch. Not fun to think about.
The last thing under consideration is my standard issue non-compete that I signed with my current company. Would a move to a position other than a direct sales role essentially make my non-compete void or would my new company have to avoid any clients that I've sold to or prospects that I've come in contact with for the next 12 months?
TLDR: I've got an opportunity to take over in a much larger role with a competitor, but I would be managing my brother (among others), and the role isn't without some risks.
