Sales Rep Seeking Advice on Commission Structure
Post Body

Hey everyone,

I started working at a solar company at the beginning of the year in 2022 and I have been doing a lot of different things to help the company grow. I was the owner's first employee and I helped him build his showroom, added the integration of a CRM, redesigned the website, helped him switch his business model to start using inbound leads instead of door-knocking, and I didn't start officially selling until October.

The owner was paying me $18/hour plus a commission structure that was as follows:

4-6kw - $500.00
6.1-8kw - $1000.00
8.1-10kw - $1500.00
10.1-12kw - $2000.00
12.1-14kw - $2500.00
14.1kw - $3000.00

Everything was going well, I started to make sales, we hired a new employee who started making sales right away, and then the owner cut the commission structure to this, while keeping our hourly rates the same:

4-6kW - $200.00
6.1-8kW - $250.00
8.1-10kW - $350.00
10.1-12kW - $500
12.1kW-14kW - $750
14.1kW - $1000

I don't know what the standards are in sales (this is my first sales job), but I just want to get a good idea of where I'm at. Does this new commission structure seem about right to everyone? I would really appreciate any advice or feedback from the community.
