tl:dr
Build a boat. Hope it floats. Race to win. Goals = stay alive, and wife is still wearing her ring when I get back.
It was in the latest Sail magazine. Here's the link, https://www.classglobe580.com.
It's a new class of small trans-oceanic boat. Basic details are: it's plywood/fiberglass; 19ft; can be homebuilt; transatlantic and round-the-world singlehanded race in 2024. You must take an approved survival and first-aid course. To build the boat to spec for transoceanic racing is roughly $22k.
I have what I would consider limited sailing experience (club racing, sailed singlehanded once on a Cape Dory in Lake Erie). My plan would be to build the basic layout (roughly $6k) and practice on Lake Erie, about 2.5 hours away. I would then upgrade the boat over the following year to bring it up to racing spec.
Before the race, I could ship my food supplies to the stopovers, and\or fellow Redditors, so that I'm not relying on provisioning at the stopover. I'm definitely not made of money, but believe I could bring together enough funds to build the boat. Due to my chosen career and Covid-19, I have the time and carpentry experience to build the boat, as well as time to sail. I think it would be incredibly hard to find sponsors, but I'm not afraid to explore that avenue, or to auction off naming\paint scheme rights.
My wife believes my plans are borderline suicidal, and hasn't signed off on the plan. I'd appreciate to hear what some of my fellow r/sailing peers think, and if they have improvements to my plan.
