Reflexive Pronouns vs Reflexive Verbs

Hi all,
Apologies if this has been asked, but I couldn’t find the answer here, or in my myriad of text books on this language.
I am facing difficulty with understanding the difference between for “true reflexives”, ie “себя” and “-ся”.
Is it simply the case that one uses “-ся” where possible, in the sense of “agent performed the action on themself” and “себя” is used where “-ся” is not?
I sincerely appreciate any and all help on this. I am stumped.
