With Covid restrictions affecting international travel and running events around the world, I am interested in finding out if there's any interest in an idea that I've had in mind for a very long time, involving destination races, based on a previous travel experience of mine. Considering the planning involved, this might be a good time to start brainstorming.
Back in 2016, I (37/Male/Canada) took a month off work and flew to Europe for a solo month-long running adventure. 4 weekends, 4 races.
- Neolithic Half-Marathon, Stonehenge, England.
- Wings for Life World Run, Dublin, Ireland.
- Tunnel 10k, Paris, France.
- Moonlight Half-Marathon, Venice, Italy
It was the experience of a lifetime. I want to do it again soon (ish). But doing this trip solo, staying in hostels, did the trick at the time, the experience left me with the feeling that there was something missing. Doing this with a small group of like-minded travelling runners would have made it even more special. I know there are many specialized running travel companies, but I find their options too limited, only offering 1 destination race, usually at expensive rates.
My plan:
- Form a small group.
- Watch event calendars, and Pick Destinations.
- Everybody makes their own travel arrangements.
- Have enough flexibility in the arrangements to separate and reconvene between events.
Dates are gonna be tricky with events gradually being rescheduled, but I would love to do this with a small group this time, and if there's enough interest, It would be a dream of mine to make this a potential business venture eventually.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Dream Destinations?
Update (June 21): Since a few people have shown interest, I am putting the wheels in motion on this project. I am going with the working name RunnersAbroad. If you are interested, you can email me at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]). I am currently working on launching a simple website to facilitate the project moving forward. Save this post for future reference. Stay tuned. :D
