A partial defense of the new mobile UI.

After sitting with it for a bit, I don't mind the icons as much as I did before and I think their decision to change them is understandable and reasonable even if the new ones don't fit my personal taste as much as the old ones. Other than my gripe about taste and preference, the new icons are fine. The new ones fit the style of the PC client more than the old ones and I can understand why they'd want their design to be consistent across different clients. While I think the old ones looked great and were perfectly readable, I'm sure they want the new icons to be consistent with the PC client to ease the transition of PC users to mobile when the app officially launches out of beta.

I play primarily with a bluetooth mouse and I never do combat while on mobile so I haven't been as impacted by the change as others. I only use mobile for afk skilling like arch w/ a Grace of the Elves and loads of porters or swarm fishing and now divination with the new update so I never opened the minimap anyway. I think the ones most affected by the change are those that use the mobile client with their hands and like to do combat with their map open.

Though I'm mostly defending the new UI in the post I will say that the map really should be on top, or we should at least get an option to change whether it's on the top or the bottom. The map in Runescape has always been on the top right -- even on the mobile client I can't really see why they would make this change. It's on the same side of the screen and seems to take up the same amount of real-estate than before but now has the potential to cover up the action bar when it's open. A very questionable design choice -- it seems they were trying to solve a problem that didn't exist and thus creating a new one in the process. Unless I'm missing something about how the map worked before I can't really see why this change was enacted.

One change I DO like is that I can read the Seren Spirit reward when my chat box is on its smallest mode. With my phone size I was not able to see what my Seren Spirit drop was about 80% of the time without making the chat box temporarily larger. I don't know how they fixed this but I seem to be able to read 100% of my drops without having to resize the chat box. Thanks for that, devs.

The thing I do think needs to change are the map being on the bottom instead of the top. As for the battery/wifi icons I can take or leave their removal. A fair, and what I assume to be easy, compromise would be simply putting them all on a toggle. Map being on the bottom/top, the wifi and battery logos being toggled on or off with a checkbox. I think that would be ideal. Most devices display their own battery information when you press the screen around the top so having it in RS is a little redundant. Making it toggleable would please all parties I think.

So yeah, the changes are fine but the map needs to be moved. I definitely had a moment of not wanting to accept change when I booted it up this morning, but after sitting with it for a while it really isn't all that bad. Please be nice to the devs -- they don't want to make a badly designed game or client and it doesn't help to treat them like they do. I got wrapped up in it too but I think some people are overacting a bit.
