Welcoming Welfare Workshop Wednesdays: Week 1 - Family Crest

Post Body

Hello, my username is Kharmencus I'm exclusively a f2p player, for many reasons, mostly I just enjoy it more.

With the addition of runescape 3 mobile, something we need to address as a community is the new and free to play player experience. Increasing the awareness of many of the concerns, improvements, and other content to provide a better community and game at large is my goal.

Every Wednesday, we will have a 4W day, which I will introduce a piece of content that could potentially be added, improved on, or reworked to improve f2p and the game at large. 4W will focus on relatively large content changes within the scope of f2p, meaning think medium length, intermediate quest from scratch as worst case scenario.

Finally, today's 4W topic is the VERY old quest Family Crest. Family Crest was made in 2002 and has remained almost unchanged outside of rewards. This is a members quest, which does have very limited content in a members area and does require 2 members items. However, the rewards would fit f2p, and the vast majority of the quest takes place in f2p areas.

4W's have 5 criteria, which are scored on a scale of 1 - 5.

S - Scope: This is f2p, and we must understand as a welfare model, we should only seek minor dev changes, if they are major, they must provide impact that heavily outweigh anything comparable in dev time for members content. Scope is defined here as specifically the cost of dev time and resources, a 5 would be a changing a variable on your lunch break.

B - Balance: Upseting f2p balance can cause catastrophic effects to the economy and game at large, it's a major reason why we get so little changes. The update must not majorly upset current f2p balancing, and if it does, it's only because it restores balance from a broken state. A 5 would have 0 change to balance, OR complete restoration of currently broken balance to nuetral.

I - Impact: If the impact of an update is low and the scope is high, it will never see the light of day. It must provide substantial value for effort spent. A 5 is Mining and Smithing Update.

A - Attainability: All content must be already obtainable in f2p, or if not, must have a high impact and be low in scope, as well as not upseting balance. Updates that add current member content to f2p is not seen favorably by any part of the runescape community. A 5 would be enabling it for f2p and nothing else needs to be done to be fully completed.

P - Precedence: F2P updates are not a place to try new things, therefore, we must show precedence of all of the suggested content. A 5 would mean it should already be f2p, as it's a sole outlier and everything else of a similar case is f2p.

5/5 Overall is a unicorn, 4 is something that should be implemented immediately, 3 is definitely discussion worthy, 2 is something that needs to be modified heavily to fit, 1 is a unicorn for opposite reasons.

Family Crest Benefits:

  • New highest requirement F2P quest and challenging content

  • Encourages exploration of Kandarin, and offers a view of Ardounge and Witchhaven, both with very important f2p quest lines that are classics and beginner friendly, with ties to f2p (sea slug ardy quests) We all remember dreaming what the other side of the wall to taverly was, now imagine seeing the imposing Ardounge instead of some mountains outside of Taverly.

  • Rewards don't unbalance f2p but do change xp rates, warrant the high quest requirements, and provide much desired qol.

  • Several Options to alter the quest based on dev time allocated, roi, etc.

  • Precedence is already establish for all quest rewards as burn reduction is provided by stove in duke's castle up til lobby and swordies, locking the bis f2p food burn reduction behind it's hardest quest is ideal. Increasing ore storage and providing equipment upgrades behind difficult quests also has presedence. Boosting the power of bolt spells is provided by fist of guthix robes. As well as making legacy members content f2p, or adding a small part of p2p areas into f2p. Making a new island or area outside of a popular p2p area was done with osrs with corsair cove which provided new mobs, and better resources behind an experienced level quest.

Downsides:

  • Does take place partially in p2p areas

  • Would require some reworking of some kind due to it being in p2p.

  • The cooking and smithing gloves, and direct deposit superheat could be argued to be OP, but there is already presedence for all of these and none of them greatly increase xp/h, but they do change them. Noted that they do not change any max xp/h rates in f2p.

SBIAP: S [3] | B [3] | I [5] | A [3] | P [4.5] total score: 3.7
