It is nice that Jagex finally released a statement, but they are just repeating what they told us years ago. Will they actually stick to their word this time? Here are a few things that bother me;
MTX is a major part of the game’s income and directly relates to the amount we can invest into its continued development.
The whole point of MTX in the first place was to provide additional income to make bigger and better updates. This has not happened.
We hear you, and we shouldn’t have let it get to this point.
I agree.
It is incredibly important for us as developers that RuneScape has a long and healthy life.
Do the Chinese share the same view?
MTX is a major part of the game’s income and directly relates to the amount we can invest into its continued development.
How much was actually invested? How much went to OSRS? How much to RS mobile instead of RS3? What about Chronicle? Idle adventures? Transformers?
you’ve not received consistently strong releases throughout this year.
I very much agree here.
we moved a few developers to focus on building the mobile client before we’d hired their replacements.
You probably should not have done that. Perhaps move them back, make RS better before spreading the virus to mobile? Hire your devs and continue the project when you actually have the support needed. You admit there are problems currently, rushing to make mobile will mean you will have to deal with future problems on 2 platforms instead of 1.
The content roadmap has been remade in recent months, directly driven by player requests.
Can we see it?
We will soon be adding a content rating system.
That's nice I guess? I personally don't care about it. If you want feedback you have RS Forums and Reddit already. Having another system in game might provide more feedback, but too much is not good either. Maybe update your own forums so they are actually easier to use and more popular, and you'll have plenty of feedback and discussion.
We are also bringing in new development team members.
I hope some of them actually have some experience.
The mobile client will also be transformative for RuneScape.
I personally disagree. I think mobile will bring RS backwards many steps, especially if it takes development time away from more important projects, which apparently it does. But okay. Another source of income is apparently better updates (right?).
promotions seemed to dominate the game.
The focus should always about the game itself. Not promotions, NEVER IN GAME. I don't care how badly you want money, if I log in I do not want to see advertisements for keys. Put promos on your website. Put them in some hidden category next to the buy bonds section. Or give us an option to toggle them off. I will never buy keys, stop asking me to.
better trade-offs between visibility and revenue.
We know MTX exist. We can see the daily free keys. We can see the rewards, and the giant promo banned under the chests. We don't need to be told constantly.
which will have greater emphasis on cosmetics and conveniences.
Greater by how much? More op dungeoneering outfits? Or actually cosmetic outfits, and more Solomons store items?
we will not be running second-chance-Tuesday for the rest of the year.
Or you could just remove it completely. People who actually buy keys for exp tend to buy most of them during the op promotions that happen often enough anyway.
We'll pot-up defence and communicate more, show you all what we're working on and better explain our decisions.
I'd like to see that content roadmap, and a summary of actual investment back into the game.
Hopefully you can see we're making some immediate changes and planning long term improvements.
That's what you said when MTX first started.
After all, the more players we have the less reliance there is on MTX revenue.
Are you sure about that?
In the last year membership has remained stable.
So why then has MTX increased?
Well those are the main things I noticed in their statement. I truly hope they are not lying again, because if they are serious about making changes, I'd love to come back to my once favorite game. It's a shame most of this was already promised years ago, and it's taken them this long to realize their errors. Hope the next few updates show they are on the right path.
