I was taught you pick up a tile on each turn in Rummi, and it’s NOT optional, has anyone else been taught this way?

Thanks, it’s what I thought but I think it’s a regional thing where I grew up as everyone played it this way

I played it this way for 20 years and never had a situation where no one could go out and the game never ended. No idea the origin of this rule though, I’ll likely just play it the official way moving forward
