Samoa has just launched their own Super Rugby-esque competition in the 'Super 9' with (Surprise, surprise) 9 teams competing in the competition. The 2 Islands (Excluding the small islands of Manono and Apolima which I will touch on later) have been split into various Teams.
Savaii
Warriors - Representing the southern part of the biggest Island, comprising of the 'Ifu o Asau', 'Salega' and 'Palauii' regions. Hopefully are nothing like their NZ counterparts.
Vikings - The northern end of Savaii, represent the 'Faasaleleaga', 'Amoa' and 'Ifu O Tane' regions. I guess my history teacher missed the part about hairy Scandinavians of dubious morals taking over the pacific but hey who am I to judge rite?
Upolu
Apia Eels - Representing the Capital and adjacent villages. Are off to a strong start after thrashing the Knights in the first round of the competition. Arguably the favorites to win the comp.
Knights - Representing the 'Faleafa' region which is squished in between the 'Tuamasaga' and Apia regions in the North of Upolu. Not much else to say about them apart from the fact that they are surely better than their counterparts in the NRL.
Eagles - Representing the 'Tuamasaga' region they are located on the North Western side of the Island. Hopefully the can FLY to a championship. Sorry, shitty joke was shitty.
Chiefs - Representing the A'ana region and located on the west coast of Apia, would also I assume, include the Islands of Manono and Apolima due to being right next to the two islands. Fun fact: Tim-Nanai William's family is from Manono which is under the (Samoan) Chiefs franchise territory. (COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT. CHIEFS=CHIEFS)
Navigators - Are from the South west of Upolu consisting of the regions 'Lefaga' and 'Safata' regions. I don't have anything semi intresting to say about this area. I guess there's a new hotel there?
'Southern Tornadoes' - Represents the south side of Upolu namely the 'Siumu' and 'Falealii' area. Has the distinction of being the only franchise that says WHERE IT FUCKING IS in Samoa/Upolu in it's actual name. Quite helpful, 10 points to Gryffindor.
Legends - Out of the East side of the Island we have the Legends. Represent the 'Anoamoa', 'Aleipata' and 'Atua I Saute' regions'. Unlike it's counterpart in the Star Wars expanded universe I hope if it gets bought out by some large company Cough Disney Cough it gets treated with a certain degree of respect.
So that's my summary of the teams taking part in the new competition, this is very basic and only covers geographical location and some 'Fun' facts. Any thoughts on what the competition may be like? Its impacts on Samoan rugby? Could it become a massive Pacific competition?
Finally
Just some additional notes, this replaces the old NPC competition which no-one in Samoa gave a flying fuck about.
