Can we get a bit of perspective on Scotland’s situation? We are 19th in the league table of registered players. 13th in the table for senior men. Half as many reg’d players as Ireland and less than 10% of SA, not to mention <3% that of England. We have only 2 pro clubs. We are 14th in the league table of clubs with 251 registered clubs, less than Malaysia, Madagascar & Canada.
Yet we are 5th in the world in a horrible group. We didn’t play well enough for sure, but there seems to be a lot of downplaying how much we punch above our weight.
I’m still proud of where we sit in the rugby world and hope we can do better in future.
Scotland do punch above their weight, and I agree that grassroots rugby in Scotland is massively struggling. My issue with the national side is the way discipline breaks down so quickly (and has done for years). Same mistakes get made time and again in each match, many of them I'd almost class as unforced.
There seems little consistency in performance, and the fact the same issues go squad to squad shows issues in the training I feel.

This is my feeling as well. SA and Ireland were always going to be hard matches, and had we lost well then I'd still have been proud. However we repeatedly made mistakes we just shouldn't have been, in a way it almost felt disrespectful. It was like the Japan match in the last RWC, we just didn't turn up and it was such a poor show.
