Problems with regex and .split or .scan

- EDIT: SOLVED! (Thanks for the help guys, you made me realize I was confusing certain things between the ways .scan and .split work and that's why I could not get either working. I was mixing things. Once I got that straight it was easy.)
This works as expected and splits on spaces: y << string.split(" ")
But this does not. I thought it would split on every character:
y = []
y << string.split(/./)
puts y[0..3]
I get a blank line. What am I missing? Why don't a get the first 4 characters as I was expecting?
