the recent DEI discourse around USSS made me think about the time my moms boss said she couldn’t tell one of her deaf and blind students that his dream of becoming an airline pilot was unrealistic
Post Body

other honourable mentions are

  • hearing impaired girl with a speech impediment who wants to be a k-pop star

  • borderline non verbal boy with down syndrome wanting (mostly on his parents insistence) to become an academic

  • deaf girl with cerebral palsy wanting to be a ballet dancer

kids having dreams bordering on the impossible or improbable is all fine and good, but isn’t it horribly cruel to play along when it was never even an option in the first place?

i guess but she usually just tries to make them aspire for something that’s more within the realm of possibilities. she never said anything to the kid specifically it was more a general discussion about new guidelines or something but she is is very blunt yes lol

most of them will never have normal jobs to begin with, she just thinks it’s better to realign their expectations to something that’s actually realistic but apparently that will “kill their spirit” lol

pretty unrealistic and actually impossible are pretty different imo

these kids are 14 lol

isn’t it worse to let them believe that they can do anything and then when push comes to shove they have completely reevaluate what they thought the rest of their lifes would be like? entertaining a normal person having a one in a million dream is not the same as egging a disabled kid on when you know there is no possible way for them to ever obtain it imo

I thought we were talking about the deaf and blind kid here? but wanting to be a ballerina who preforms with a specific ballet group when you can’t even walk is not something that’s going to happen. why lead them on?

[not loaded or deleted]

not exactly but I have a few with very successful “unrealistic” careers

you know that scene in little miss sunshine where paul dano’s character realises he’s colourblind and won’t be able to become a fighter pilot, something he’s dedicated his life to? imagine that but that his parents knew all along and never told him, that would be cruel if anything. building your life around one thing only to find out it was never possible in the first place and everyone else knew would be more humiliating and soul killing than someone suggesting that maybe you should set your sights on something within the realms of possibilities
