The halfwit prince

Now this is a story all about how my game got turned upside down…

My first and only campaign as a Dungeon master too… This game lasted all the way through to the end of my written story line (surprising I know), however, like every D&D campaign, it had that 1 problem player. We’ll call him Edgelord.

To give context my game was very home brew and had a lot of modernized items, Edgelord had an interesting backstory that I wanted to play around with, although this ended up being a big mistake in the end.

Edgelord was a Tiefling ranger who was raised in the Fey by the princess of the Fall Fey. He ended up being a half Tiefling half Eladrin prince who was conceived as a truce between a section of the Shadow Fell and the Fey (I’m new to D&D so bear with me on my shitty plots). In concept things should have fallen right in place and I really wanted him to be a focal point of my story, but at some point but he got to be sooooooo edgy (hence the name).

Edgelord’s problems all started when he wanted to SCALP everything he killed and carry the scalp with him everywhere he went as a trophy. It got to be so bad from an RP point of view that everyone else in the party begged him to stop. His problems then morphed into him wanting me to describe the penis size of the people he fucked; that really didn’t phase me but he was always on the prowl in new cities.A moment of peace arrived as the players slowly jelled and continued going smoothly until I started to use elements of his backstory in the plot of the campaign, or at least for that arc. As the ideal DM I aim to be, I’m always down for character involvement but JESUS CHIRST he started cussing me out whenever an opponent would crit anyone in the party and would verbally abuse me for hours on end every time the party was in combat (our sessions were usually 8 hours weekly). The abuse slowly started taking a toll on me but I was able to ignore it and continue with the other players like normal until a blessing came in the form of K-Chan. K-Chan was a close friend of Edgelord’s and, by luck of the draw, she ended up receiving a really interesting item that could let her see through different planes of existence. This item really shifted the campaign in a more fun direction and for time, calmed Edgelord down.

Since K-Chan was there, Edgelord would act like he’s not a total douche to me until another new factor was introduced. K-Chan brought her close friend and neighbor KatKin along. KatKin was a great fun ball of energy who, for some reason, I never truly dedicated time to develop his story yet always gave cool stuff too (if you are reading this, I love you buddy and wish we did more with your backstory). KatKin was really close to K-Chan and Edgelord really, really didn’t like that. Once again we were at the point of our campaign where things slowly shifted from Edgelord being chill to him cussing me out in combat 100% more than he had in the past. If he could ever criticize anything KatKin did, he would call him an idiot and make the other party members really uncomfortable. One of my primary plot points in this campaign was a war in the Fey to defend the Edgelord’s home. Edgelord was so invested in the story that ramped up the insults even more so and would utterly bash me non-stop. He would scream if the bad guys succeeded in anything and would get really condescending if an NPC tried helped him in combat but failed. I can safely quote him saying things like "yeah get fucked, you didn’t have a chance, you fucking piece of shit", meanwhile I’m sitting here like, “Dude, I’m the one controlling the NPC helping you. Why are you still shitting on me?”

Things continued on like this for 6 to 7 months (don’t ask me why we put up with it for so long, we don’t know), but one day we introduced a new player who we’ll call Red. Red was, and is, an amazing player and person to be around, she took care of us and let us play in her house, and shit was lit, however with Edgelord still on his tirade, the game became even darker. When K-Chan and Red started dating Edgelord kept throwing tantrums longer and more often than he had in the past. Anytime anyone had fun, he would berate them, calling the rest of the party idiots, and naturally, this pissed off everyone. With the addition of party members that did not hold as many fond memories of him as we did, the general party mood began to turn against Edgelord to the point that KatKin almost beat the shit out Edgelord, and I had to physically get between them and get onto Edgelord in front of the party. Since I had publicly humiliated Edgelord, he calmed down for a time and the game continued on, no bad blood between KatKin and him. But as the trends show, this was only all too temporary. At this point in the game, his shit was evolving from extreme shit shows to straight up lying on his dice rolls and the size of his coffers. A normal roll for him was rolling 25 or above and if you ever needed to buy anything, he always had an infinite amount of gold. His antics really weren’t a HUGE issue until one day most of the party got wiped. The entire group needed diamonds to get resurrected, and when asked Edgelord stated, "oh duh I totally have enough ". This MASSIVE lie prompted an audit of the guild bank, and when I went over the logs I kept I found out he had created around 14k gold he didn’t have... this devastated the party because they were letting him buy all the diamonds for resurrections with money they didn’t have. Naturally I let them buy the diamonds, since they were all lied to as well, but this the final straw and was enough for every player to want him gone.

The campaign continued on without him, and I found a new focal point to tie the story around in the form of another character, relegating Edgelord’s character to NPC. Nobody regretted letting him go, and everyone was extremely happy with the ending of this almost 2 yearlong campaign.

That’s the whole story. Thank you for reading this far, I know it’s a long one, and if I ended up missing something, it’s because I wrote this all in one go and it was a 2 year long culmination, but if you want more stories from this group or more details added go ahead and tell me below! ;) Ty saph for editing for me love you :3
