Why I won't let players pass notes anymore.
Post Body

HOLY CRAP! Where do I begin. Some backstory and then what happened tonight.

Hi, I'm Awfulmonk I've been playing D&D and similar games for almost 5 or 6 years and I've been a DM for about 3.

I've had plenty of groups, highschool, college, adults, and mixed. Heck I've even played with a 12 year old and 60 year old in the same party. Mostly dudes, but that happens. I always encourage players, and especially try to bring more women in because this gets a bad rag.

Well, today the stereotypes are true, today...oh boy. Today sucked guys.

So, I've been playing with this group about a month. Individually I've known and played with 4 of the 6 players for about 2 years at this point, and the other two were friends of friends. Surprisingly unlike most stories the two newbies to the group weren't the problem.

One thing I should let you know is that I encourage cross talk at my table but I mitigate the noise by allowing my players to write on notecards and pass them back and forth. It could be anything like, I whisper to you that this beer sucks too, I motion behind you that this guy cant be trusted while he's talking to you basically anything that doesn't actually require you to say something. This even includes things like what the players do during whatever is happening with another player. So far its worked great and I enjoy reading the cards.

Well...today is the day I'm going to stop doing that. Sure this might be the one time it happens but I'm not going to take that risk.

So the session was going on great. One of the players brought a homemade pizza, another some cupcakes. You know, good stuff. We were about 3 hours into the fourth session and players were dungeon crawling. Now, one of my players whom we shall call A (for Adam you peice of shit) has been flirting with another player G (stands for Girl) and while she didn't say anything outloud (I had also talked to her in private and she said she had thick enough skin to handle it) she was obviously not super comfortable but like I already said she told me she could deal with it.

Well today, A starts passing some notes to some players when a female NPC shows up, details on the convo doesn't matter or honestly what was happening because it in no way relates to this. But I will say the description of the npc was sorta close to the girl, like they shared the same hair and skin color but thats about it kinda close.

Anyways, so I see A is passing notes to G, and G's face goes like white - she looks up at him with a surprised face and says "You fucking asshole, this better not be true." A Responds by shaking his head with this big grin on his face. Then G storms out and I'm like 'wtf'. Everyone at the table is like 'wtf' and A quickly gathers the notes. I stop the session, because 'wtf' and ask him 'Hey Adam, what the f*ck.' He tries to wave it off as no big deal, but I know G pretty freaking well. Like we went to prom together (not together together, but we double dated). So I was just like 'Dude, no...tell me what happened." And he keeps trying to brush it off as nothing, but like...in a I did something but I'm not telling way. So I stop the session and pack up. Stating that we need to talk to G. Dude gets super fucking defensive...like crazy out of nowhere.

OH! Forgot to say, he's been sitting this entire time. Then when we all start to get up he keeps sitting. Then the host kicks us out and he's still sitting there. We're still trying to figure out what the fuck happened.

Then he's forced to get up and we see a freaking wetspot right next to his crotch. Yes, that kind. No, not like he had pissed himself, like another male fluid exited and was now see-able. We all know what it is, and one of the other guys throws A's shit across the room.

Lots of loud words with explicit insults...spoken very loudly were said at A and everyone...including myself told him he wasn't welcome back...this guy was in 5 games if I believe but now not anymore.

Anyway story doesn't end there. We take a moment and we manage to get G to come back and talk about what happened. She tells us what she remembers and we ask her what she wants to do. She says she doesn't want to see him again...done! I ask if she wants to do anything else...she says no. Okay - that was 3 hours ago.

Listen this story is already long enough...I called the cops. I don't care, I was there too. They asked if we knew where he lived, yes. Probably there now, I ask them to charge him with indecent exposure. Host agrees, since its his place.

NOW - HERE IS THE FUN PART!!

Turns out, this guys records shows multiple...MULTIPLE instances of stuff similar to this...including Indecent Exposure in front of a minor! GUYS WHAT THE FUCK!!!

First: Why the hell does this keep happening to people in our hobby!

Second: At the Table! REALLY?!?!?! At the table, what the hell is going through your head Adam. Your sick, thats sick

...so not very detailed, but frankly thats okay for this instance. On the bright side, the cupcakes were delicious and I got the recipe for them before the incident happened...yay?

Any questions - ask in comments. Keep in mind this happened a few hours ago..so I'm a little worked up still.

Edit: Holy crap not even 24 hours and this blew up...I mean compared to all my other posts I've made on reddit. I'll keep checking back and answer any questions I can. You've all been really civil about reading this so thanks for that. Hopefully others - if you find yourself in a similar situation shudders will do something similar as I did. Maybe handle it a bit more calmly. Idk you do you!

Edit 2: A lot of people are asking what the note said, and I should have clarified. But Adam made sure to keep the notes with him when he took them off the table. I never personally saw or read them after that but 'G' said it was basically something akin to... "Man I just jizzed thinking about this NPC, but I was picturing you.' Or something like that. Again I never saw the note, he either stuffed it in his pocket or his bag after he took it off the table.

Edit 3: hey guys I love reading your comments but let's try to keep all the conversation civil - we all come from different places and as is the way of the internet our opinions and tones aren't best communicated when other people just read them. Let's be a positive community and learn from every story posted here so that if it hopefully never happens to us we can be prepared.
