So I’m running Saltmarsh in 5E with a group of four of my best bro friends. We’re in chapter two of my ongoing campaign, and so have been playing in total for about six months now. I’ve gotten pretty familiar with my group, and I know generally how my PCs operate, how they roll, etc.
My girlfriend is kind of interested in D&D and has been spectating on our games to see if she wants to eventually jump in. She’s been a good observer, up until now.
This evening, my girlfriend suddenly burst out into giggles as I’m rolling dice during an encounter with rot grubs in the cellar of the haunted mansion. She’s seated behind and to the side of me, so she can see behind my screen and what I’m doing. We’re all having a good time and she’s been a good sport, so we all pause and look at her. She shakes her head, and indicates we should continue with her hand. She clears her giggles, I shrug, and move on. Two more times during the evening she bursts into giggles and then quickly silences herself. Each time is during a combat scene where I’m rolling for NPCs.
The session ends just outside a door with blue glowing light. Everyone’s had fun, and afterward my gf apologizes to me for the outbursts of giggles. I ask why all of a sudden she started when the last three times she’s watched she’s been completely quiet.
“It’s because I realized you roll your dice the same way you pleasure yourself,” she said. “You use the same hand gestures, same placement, same everything.”
I burst out laughing after a moment of pondering, because I realize she’s right.
Then I go silent… because I realize she’s right.
And I’ll never be able to look at my party members rolling their dice the same way again.
Had to share this one with y’all… happy rolling! 😦😏
