Good book for world building?

So I'm looking to get one of my former players who's still in prison a book and he said that he's more interested in world building type things.
The examples he gave were a logging town. Why would it have a store or inn if it's a small town of 50 or so?
Honestly, this sounds more like something in a sociology text book, but is there anything setting/rules neutral that would cover this?
