Honest question: Why is FATE (or universal systems) not more popular?

Post Body

I have been a GM now for almost 30 years, and I have played and GMed a lot of systems from AD&D to GURPS. Personally I prefer a more universal system without classes and restrictive straight jackets on character options.

That being said, my wife introduced me to FATE during the pandemic and I have been itching to run a game and learn the system. It seems to be what I have been looking for, a simple universal system that encourages players to work with the GM to create the world and gives a lot of freedom.

Looking at the number of members to different subreddits, I have noticed that FATE (and GURPS and others) don't have as many members, and in contrast not as much popularity, to say D&D 5e.

Is it that FATE (or GURPS, for example) isn't as attractive to others? Or is it that its simply not known of to most?

EDIT: My question also stems from the number of games hosted on Roll20. 5e has the lion's share, FATE and games like it have maybe a half a page at times.
