Is it just me, or does anyone else cringe when they see homebrew games being advertised? They seem to be really common. Don't get me wrong, I'm grand with people being creative, but whenever I read the majority of descriptions (when there is one) I am out off. Perhaps I'm just a grumpy old fuck?

This got me thinking. The word homebrew seems to be really vague most of the time. What does it actually mean? For some people it's creating their own worlds, and for others it's creating their own towns, NPCs, etc, in an existing world. For others still, they have heavily modded the rules. As it's such a vague word, we all have probably homebrewed, but I've never considered anything I've done to be a homebrew.

Should there be a standard useage for the word? If so, what should it be?
