This Session Zero is for a new campaign with randomly generated characters. About half of the steps are random, so I hope it can be useful in system with e.g. point-buy too. All steps are done in the open with the whole group, but if a player wants to hide some of the information, that's OK.
EDIT: Yes, this is based on how to generate a character in the game Warhammer FRP. However, each point will give hints, or provide opportunity for the GM or player to give hints on the setting, genre and tone. Some parameters, such as level of in-party conflict are left out.
- Choose race: Elf, Halfling, Dwarf or Human
- Choose Background: bourgeoisie (the rich, city professionals), mercantile (traders), military, urban, rural, coastal, wilderness eller traveling. Preferably only one character per background.
- Roll for father’s and mother’s profession depending on background
- Roll for star sign
- Determine the number of siblings
- Roll for dooming (a foretelling of how you’re going to die, as divined at age ten)
- Determine your number of fate points (these will save your life when you should have died) and re-rolls. If you roll the minimum number of fate points, you get 4 re-rolls, otherwise you get 3.
- Roll for the eight characteristics and number of wounds. Spend re-rolls or “Shallya’s mercy” (poor stat is set to average) as you wish.
- Choose or roll for general looks (eye/hair/skin color) and weight
- Note all race skills, roll for background skills and talents. Spend re-rolls as needed.
- Roll for career twice ( re-rolls) on your background list, choose one.
- Note advancement scheme, skills, talents, equipment and money from starting career and background.
- Roll for distinguishing mark (e.g. broken nose) and and age. Adjust age a few years if you want.
- Together: determine why you are in the small town of [Delberz]. Start thinking about how the characters know each other.
- Choose one positive/constructive passion and one negative/destructive passion for your character.
- Choose instincts, sources of capability in the heat of the moment. Examples: madness, recklessness, pain, dependency, discipline. These tie in with fortune points (daily re-rolls)
- If you have leftover re-rolls, each one gives one roll on a equipment table with potentially worthless, useful or valuable stuff.
- From a personality deck (make or buy), each player takes 1-3 descriptors (such as “talkative”, “considerate”, “ambitious”, etc) and gives them to another player so that each player gives one descriptor and receives one. The basis is what they have perceived so far of the other characters.
- Review the character with the gamemaster
- In this campaign, I’ll also let the players make choices in a dream sequence, to tentatively determine their affinity with the four Chaos Gods.
