I've played 5e for a few years now and its always felt a bit too epic for me, especially the relative power jump between levels and the fact that you're expected to be a demigod or more by the max level. Based on other recommendations I tried out a few OSR style games like DCC and OSE, which, while enjoyable, didn't seem the best fit for longer, more narrative campaigns (100 sessions with a relatively consistent party). I am wondering if there are games out there that maybe strike a good balance between the two, or are just less epic than D&D 5e that still have plenty of character options and don't risk killing player characters too easily.

It's also quite well priced - the box set with all the rules, a full campaign, and extras like dice, map poster, etc, for like £33 if you like in the right place
