Hypothetically, is it possible to make a legally distinct DnD clone that doesn't fall under the OGL?

Post Body
I was working on my own game that was a mix of mechanics from the history of the D20 system in my free time as a passion project. I know you can't copyright game mechanics, so how many words need to be changed, and things rephrased before the game I had intended to make would be legally distinct enough not to fall under the OGL 1.1?
