So I gave up my apartment this summer in hopes of saving money by renting a room in a nice home with a substitute public school teacher. I have lives alone for the better part of my life and my experience in sharing a living space with a total stranger was totally new. I understood the risks and weighed them heavily against the benefits and after screening this lady to the best of my ability i decided to give it a go. Initially it worked out very well but little by little the small things turned to big things and then the red flags started popping up(she really hid things very well). I should note that to begin with things were great as they usually are, her needs and my needs were similar and we both worked a lot and had/have very little social life. We quickly became a little more than the clinical room mates(I was careful to not let it get to far past the boundary line but enough for both of us to get something out of it). It started small like boring a little money or allowing her to have some of my food but I quickly realized the rules set didn’t apply to her just me. Like her rule of not eating the last one of her anything, that’s cool because I never ever eat anyone’s food no matter what. So I never touched her food but I would notice she would eat some of my chobani fruit yogurts even when she had her own brand free yogurt from Aldi, she had her own yet opted to eat mine since they were .. delicious and hers were… not. It didn’t bother me till she started basically helping herself and eating all of them. One day she finally acknowledged it but did so in the most annoying fashion, like yes I ate them and hahah it was all of them, don’t worry I’ll replace them to which she didn’t. She did the same with my fabric softener and dryer sheets but complained that I used her toilet paper. So I started buying less food and keeping my laundry stuff in my room and I noticed she started getting very passive aggressive like when I went to turn the heat on she told me not to. So I just ignored her, my plan was to move out within 6months but I guess I’ll have to do it sooner. Well about two weeks ago she sends me a text stating she’s adding an addendum to the lease and if I don’t sign to agree to the $200 increase in rent she would kick me out on the first ! Wow just wow. So I’m being extorted right before Christmas, can’t leave even if I wanted to. I immediately started looking for apartments and haven’t gotten a call back yet but I wonder what are my legal rights? We have an agreement that’s month to month, she already said she would give me till the 17th but I’m worried she’s going to pull something, like put my belongings on the street. She’s become unstable and totally unpredictable, luckily I know her neighbor who is a friend of hers and told him the entire story hopefully he will help me. I’m scared tbh this lady is weird af
