Dating and derby

When I started roller derby, several years ago now. I was told âyou canât date your teammatesâ, I believe this is an unofficial rule but just common courtesy so you donât upset your teammates. However, we have a ref who is say isnât technically on our team because they ref for other teams as well. My question is, would it be in poor taste to try and ask this person on a date?
Side note: Iâm polyamorous and found lots of other people who play derby are also some kind of non monogamous.
