I passed the first half of my intro to derby course today!
I was feeling nervous going into it, but still calm and collected. We were tested on skating basics. T stops, plows, weaves, recoveries, pacelines and speed, ECT.
In the middle of my test, my pivot pin was popping out of place when I was on curves, and I had a good wipe out when doing a transition on a turn. Thankfully one of my classmates pointed out that was happening! Unfortunately I couldn't fix it 100% during the test, but I pushed on, went hard and I did it!
I can't remember the last time I've participated in a test of endurance like this, i don't think ever in my adult life.
After the first practice, I wasn't sure if I could do it, I was so winded and tired. But now, two months later, I'm feeling really good about my skill level.
Going into derby basics, I'm nervous, but also excited to start contact. I'm a little scared about getting hurt, I'm a bit accident prone. But I'm going to combat that by trying my best to be aware of my surroundings.
I want to acknowledge, albeit anonymously, how amazing my coaches and league members are. They all wear so many hats, and are one of the most supportive groups of folks I've ever had the pleasure to meet.
The amount of growth I've watched in the last 10 weeks has been immensely inspiring, really kept me going when it was hard, and I really look forward to the future.
I LOVER ROLLER DERBY!!
