Sooo.
I have been having a ton of fun skating trails and trying new gear to find my favorite set up but honestly, I have not practiced stopping beyond a dragging T stop. I have had limited success doing faux hockey stops but only at slow speeds. Also, I have had a few times I bailed to my knee pads when I saw something and needed to stop quickly.
But, as a n00b, I knew I should be spending more time on stopping than I was... Well... today was the day I learned my lesson. I was going down a trail with my wife on a bike that I had never been to. There was a steep roundabout under a bridge that I decided to go down without scouting in advance. I was a little apprehensive because it was turning to the right, requiring a left-legged cross-over which I am weak at doing.
I made it down to the flat and was semi-celebrating until I saw a hairpin turn to the right at the bottom, which I was unprepared for at speed. If I didn't make the turn, I was going to land in a sea of blackberry bramble. I knew I had to slow down fast and I froze.
I tried to make the turn when I should have slowed down or stopped but panicking, my legs flew out from under me, and I slid about 5 feet on my side on rough asphalt. I have the worst road rash of my life right now from my shoulder to my hip with my forearm taking the brunt of it.
I need to learn to stop. It could have been a whole lot worse if I ran into someone or ended up flying into the blackberries... ugh.
So, what is your goto emergency stop? I was riding a 4x90 setup and believed I have been hurt more seriously if I was wearing my Rollerblade E2 pro 125s
TLDR - N00b is bad at stopping, bombs down a roundabout and wipes out. Has seen the light and wants advice...
