The woman known not by her name by known as the “crooked cook” had been summoned before the king, a request she had grown accustomed to—though every time, it filled her with unease.
His moods were unpredictable…. She adjusted the hem of her apron, trying to calm her nerves, though her hands still trembled slightly.
As she approached the massive, iron-wrought doors to the king’s private chambers, two guards stepped aside with little more than a silent glance.

Emily (That is the crooked cooks name.) Hobbled forward, trying to steady herself under his gaze, her hands clasped nervously in front of her. She stood in the center of the room, feeling the weight of his eyes upon her.
