Freezing in DCSS

I'm new to DCSS, very new, so I am not sure if it's my fault or not but... If I am in the middle of a fight and level up the game freezes, all i can do is press a button to show more info about my level up but otherwise i can't do anything and have to restart the game never to play that character again. I have never made it past xplvl 5 just to show how noob I am.
EDIT: I play tile version if that helps you ponder the problem.
