What is this.. rock? Found somewhere between Winslow and Williams, AZ.

Pulled off the road to stretch and check out the scenery.. found a handful of interesting rocks (meteor fragments, too!) And then I found this strange thing.
We were in what felt like the middle of nowhere. No construction nearby. The only thing I can think of is the yellow stripe paint that they use on highways.. however, this was embedded in some sandstone, so I don't think it's recent.
I cannot scratch or break it by hand. It appears to be somewhat porous as well.
Any ideas?
