Specimen collected from an old quarry in central Illinois in a water shed connecting to a large river.
All the specimens have cracks and all the "freshly" exposed materials are black, but the outside 0.03-0.06 inches seems to be oxidized to a red color. Found alongside various "river rocks", calcites, quartz, Jaspers, and limestone.
The rock is pretty heavy for their size, reminds me of the weight of iron ore I've found in the past, so I'm assuming it's iron rich.
Does not strike a spark when hit together. A cheap 440 stainless steel knife could not leave a mark, so I'm assuming it's Mohs hardness is above 7.
