Hi guys.
The basics:
I'm a New Zealander who has been planning a USA road trip for ages. I love beer, space stuff, BBQ and driving. I have planned a 3 month road trip from Aug-Oct that hits all 48 states in 90 days. I'll be in an SUV, sleeping in it for the first half and then meeting a friend for the second half where we will get a motel. Its about 210 hours of driving.
The evolution:
Version 1: Decide to go to USA to see the solar eclipse on August 21. Start planning. Settle on the middle of nowhere Nebraska as the most suitable place to see eclipse. Start adding destinations that I've always wanted to see - Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Houston Space Centre, Gary Indiana, Smithsonian museum.
Version 2: Start researching favourite bands and add a few key dates/locations to be in to see them live.
Version 3: Realise that Im going to be in about 40 states anyway and decide why not just visit each one and get a photo at the welcome sign?
Version 4: Realise not every state border road has a welcome sign. Spend countless hours on google maps checking street view and noting the GPS coordinates of the relevant signs close to my route.
Version 5: Find out Eddie Vedder is playing at a bourbon festival near Nashville. Only problem is we have to be in Nashville a week after the festival to pick up friend #3. Decide to hit the festival, then hit Cape Canaveral in Florida, then backtrack to Nashville.
Version 6. Find out the original Colonel Sanders restaurant is available to visit. Add another detour to the middle of nowhere, Kentucky. Not high cuisine but KFC is our 2am drunk fast food of choice so we feel we owe it to the Colonel.
The maps:
Starts from San Francisco and returns to San Francisco. This link has the draft paper version and the final google version: http://imgur.com/a/pgKDy
Final thoughts:
210 hours driving in 90 days is a little ambitious given I want to spend a bit of time in certain places, but I have a friend to share the driving with after the halfway point. I have a nation wide gym membership and a few friends to stay with along the way. I also don't want to spend much time in the big cities as have already done LA before. More interested in seeing your amazing country, seeing the small towns and eating lots of food!
Any questions/critiques/suggestions welcome!
