Cool they’re building a new soccer stadium on campus. But the real question is when will the school transition from D3 to D1 (beside the hockey teams being D1)? If Niagara or Canisius have D1 sports, why can’t we? We’re almost at 20,000 students on campus whereas Niagara or Canisius only have 3,000-5,000 students. It doesn’t make sense. Sure the money is the situation but we reached the $1B goal a few years ago.
The issue now is that the NCAA doesn't want to move single sports at school to D1 anymore. The RIT lacrosse team could compete there now. They regularly scrimmage D1 and D2 teams and handle them. They even go toe to toe with Yale's starters. The issue is that the rest of the athletics aren't ready.
The question is, as a school, would you move all sports at once and just go through the growing pains? Or, would you do it sport by sport?
The athletic building upgrade is way overdue! There's a lot of D3 schools that have better facilities. It was time for an upgrade. Especially for the lacrosse team.
Moving to D1 doesn't mean that the school will lose focus on being a tech school. I see the athletics program fitting right in with the Patriot League, where they do have high academic standards for most of their schools. NJIT is D1. Athletics is such a small part of the school and will continue to be.
