I don't think this game's soundtrack gets enough love, it is one of the most unique and best mood-setting soundtracks I've ever heard in a videogame or at all. I cannot stop listening to Once in a Lullaby from the Survivors of the Void DLC. It's so smooth, beautiful, expressive, even haunting. I love how all of the music in this game starts off simple and builds upon itself, but I especially like it in this song. Please keep in mind I don't know shit about music, so I'm just talking shit lol.
The song starts off simple, of course. It's a nice beat, kind of slow and innocent, if not a bit suspicious, if that makes sense. It's laying the groundwork, doing these little doo doo doos until HEY it goes into what I'm pretty sure is a saxophone (btw I love the blend of instruments in this soundtrack, nothing takes over it all goes together so well).
The sax plays a lullaby. It's kind of abstract, mystical, it's really wavy and smooth. It has a really calming tune, and it's even a bit slow, but it has a sad, haunting undertone to it. It's like it's been struggling for a long time, and is now just trying to sleep, even though it doesn't want to. Then it goes back to the beats for a while, and introduces guitar undertone.
The guitar then takes over, with the same melody, refined, albeit with a rougher edge. The lullaby sounds more concrete. It's telling you to relax and go to sleep, to just let it go and calm down. But, behind it, a violin, or some other dumbass string starts playing. It's hard to hear at first, but it sings along with the guitar. It brings back the same smooth, abstract feel of the saxophone, but this time it sounds more desperate. It's as if the two parts of the sax section have been split into competing halves. The guitar continues steadily, while the strings slowly get louder. They're begging to be heard, begging to get out, they're just trying to escape the lullaby, or at least what once may have been such a thing. The guitar and beat behind it trudges on.
But the cries get louder.
It suddenly turns into more of a siren, crying into the void, refusing to be left behind, refusing to listen to the hollow shell of a lullaby, refusing to succumb to it. It all peaks, singing together in a beautiful, expressive crescendo, the drums picking up, the guitar marching on in its seductive song, and the sirens crying desperately in harmonic retaliation. It's filled with emotion, personality, style, and mood.
It suddenly ends, and goes back to slow, careful beats, overlayed by a synth or whatever the fuck that is, mimicking the culmination of previous instruments. Finally, the saxophone returns, but this time singing the same desperate song of the strings. Despite this, it's more calming. It's triumphant, in a way, but still has that sense of pleasant, accepting sorrow in the back. Maybe it's still crying into the void, even after such an emotional display. Nevertheless, it once again sounds like a lullaby, or at least, what once could have been a lullaby. And with that, it leads its final calming notes, by itself, into the sorrowful, pleasant, acceptant end of the song.
Sorry if this makes absolutely zero sense, or if it's breaking the rules, or if no one likes it, or whatever. I just don't really have anyone who I can talk about this to or who would understand, and I really wanna find someone who appreciates this song and soundtrack as much as I do. Thank you for reading, if you've gotten to this point, I hope what I wrote can be comprehended.
