Dumb question about flares

I just got diagnosed but I've been having issues that were probably RA and Lupus for a while.. I seem to have two cycles of "flares" one is months or years long, with bouts where I get into a couple months of only low level pain and issues. The other is the random clumps of days where I can barely function at all. I've missed 5 days in two clumps of work out of the last 8. Is the two or three days at a time a flare, the weeks I can't function a flare, the whole last three months a flare?
It's all semantics, just curious what other people are describing when they talk about their flares. Hope this made any sense at all.
