Since retiring I have kept busy with helping my daughter plan her wedding, which has now passed. Also started playing pickleball for regular exercise. And I am busy with a non profit helping them get some new things rolling.
But, I found myself spending too much idle time playing silly games on my phone or watching TV. So I have started limiting those activities and have replaced them with podcasts that teach me something. I particularly enjoy those that discuss how the brain works and ways to make the best use of your brain (and how to feed it)! I don't want to learn yet another computer software (did that so many times in my work days), but I do still want to grow. I am loving this opportunity to learn things I never had time for before!
What are you doing to keep your brain from turning to mush?
I'm a ways away from retirement, but in my business I deal a lot with retirees, and so I'm already thinking about how to spend my time when I do retire. I have a couple of thoughts.
First, I love my job (lawyer with an office practice) so I plan to keep my hand in that a bit. Probably just keep a handful of my favorite estate planning clients. Maybe 10-15 hours/week. My goal is to have a couple of younger lawyers that I can have to the actual heavy lifting. But I love talking to my clients.
Next-I always loved black & white film photography, including being in the darkroom. However it's incredibly time consuming-so you can see where that is going. It's pretty easy to spend 4-5 hours in the darkroom before you even realize it. Plus I get a lot of pleasure out of creating or producing things-that sense of accomplishment.
