Town Hall Tactics
Post Body

Word has it RT4 groups are planning to attend town hall meetings of pro-NSA Congress members. This was a Tea Party strategy that lead to a lot of media coverage, much of it negative. They booed, hissed, shouted slurs, and generally came across as mean-spirited, bigoted, and misinformed -- in other words, an angry mob.

So here's how to do it right:

The speaker begins by saying "mic check". When the people near the speaker respond "mic check", the speaker knows they have the group's attention. The speaker says a short phrase, part of a speech, and then pauses. Those that can hear what the speaker has said repeat the phrase in unison, and when finished, the speaker says another phrase, then pauses again waiting for a response, etc., until the speaker's speech is complete.

  • Be prepared for attempts by the congressperson to spin the issue. Don't let them flatter you with attention, or distract you from your message. Finish what you have to say, and if they continue to engage, have short, one sentence questions or statements prepared in advance.

  • "Smuggle in" signs and banners. People with signage should try to get themselves as close to the congressperson as possible. When the "mic check" starts, bring out the signs and banners. Face them not at the congressperson, but at the crowd and any media that might be present.

  • Stay organized, determined, and don't back down. Decide as a group beforehand how you will respond if attempts are made to remove you from the meeting. Either go calmly, or stand your ground calmly. Stay non-violent and on-message.

  • Have someone taking pictures and video. Publicize as widely as possible.
