Gort (Genetically Organized Robotic Technology according to the backronym champions of the world) is a robot designed to protect the alien coalition's ambassadors but also annihilate all of a specific species if necessary. It has two main forms firstly a largeish robot and secondly a grey goo nanotech swarm.

Robot Form

• Survives getting "flashed" which appears to be done by a rocket engine.

• Resists several kinds of scans and fractures a diamond drill when they try to use the drill on it.

• Probably forces some Sidewinder missiles to self destruct and then takes over some drones forcing them to crash into some tanks.

• Uses some kind of sonic attack to incapacitate humans and dogs while also turning off numerous pieces of military equipment (which would be hardened against EMP). The deactivation power goes all the way out to the buildings in the background at least.

Nanotech Form

I am breaking this down into two sections. Low density is when the nanotech is not visible on the macroscale. High density is when it is visible on the macroscale. The latter would require A LOT more nanotech than the former hence why they are split.

• Nanotech will eat material to create more of themselves which allows for exponential growth until the nanotech exceeds the surface area of what they are eating.

• We should note Gort can be very selective. In the film their "objective" was to wipe out humanity and our stuff while leaving the biosphere intact.

Low Density Nanotech

• Eats a diamond drill bit fast enough it is visible on the macroscale.

• Eats through a man's suit

• Eats through the metal restraints and starts eating through the glass.

• Survives getting flashed (it is easiest to see towards the top of the center window).

High Density Nanotech

• Sends a thick metal door flying dozens of meters.

• Takes a fair amount of gun/cannon/rocket fire.

• Eats a football stadium in seconds.

• We should note that it doesn't always eat stuff that quickly. This is New York after a few minutes of exposure.

  • Then again before that most of the swarm was above New York rather than moving through it.

• Outruns and eats a truck in moments.

  • Note how the low density nanotech swarm precedes the high density swarm. So defenders without very sensitive equipment could easily be distracted by the high density swarm and still be overrun when they low density swarm starts eating their position.

• Makes it about 3/4s of the way from Mount Weather to the Great Lakes within about 30 minutes though it was moving slower in other directions. With my rough google maps distance measuring that could easily require the swarm to be moving ~300-600 kph. For reference at 300 kph it would take it ~2.7 days to make it half way around the Earth.

• Hitting the swarm with Sidewinder missiles just appears to make it bigger. Though we should note Sidewinders are most definitely not the ideal missile for this kind of job.
