Sonny is a variant of the United States Robotics NS-5 model robot. He was built by Doctor Alfred Lanning who wrote the three laws of robotics and ushered in the age of modern robotics.

He has some differences from the normal NS-5s namely he can simulate emotion, he dreams, he is constructed with a denser alloy, and he can choose break the three laws if he wants to.

This RT mentions Spooner a few times, he is a cop and in terms of physicals he is mostly just a pretty in shape human. But he does have some cybernetic implants, one of his arms, a few ribs and a lung which should be ether on par or worse than what the robots are using.

The guns in setting make capacitor noises yet still appear to have a muzzle flash and sound like a normal gun. There are a few possible explanations.

  1. They are coilguns (they cannot be railguns because we see inside the barrel in a shot) that also use propellant for the added kick. This could potentially improve muzzle velocity and power. Albeit not really quantifiable improvement but still something to think about.

  2. The writers/director wanted the guns to make sci-fi noises.

Note: Sonny is made from a denser alloy than normal NS-5s so presumably he is more durable than they are.
