Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West

'You know, Elphie, when you didn't come back from the Emerald City with Glinda that time, everyone said you'd gone mad, and had become an assassin.'

'People always did like to talk, didn't they? That's why I call myself a witch now: the Wicked Witch of the West, if you want the full glory of it. As long as people are going to call you a lunatic anyway, why not get the benefit of it? It liberates you from convention.'

'You're not wicked,' said Boq.

'How do you know? It's been so long,' said the Witch, but she smiled at him.

Boq returned the smile, warmly. 'Glinda used her glitter beads, and you used your exotic looks and background, but weren't you just doing the same thing, trying to maximize what you had in order to get what you wanted? People who claim that they're evil are usually no worse than the rest of us.' He sighed. 'It's people who claim that they're good, or anyway better than the rest of us, that you have to be wary of.'

Elphaba is one of the Thropps, the ruling bloodline of Munchkinland. She was also born with green skin (a result of the elixir her biological father, the man who would go on to become known as the Wizard of Oz, used to drug and rape her mother), which isolated her from society. While attending college, Elphaba fell in with an Animal rights group, becoming a terrorist in the eyes of the Wizard's new regime. Now having studied sorcery and established herself as a leader in the western Vinkus land, Elphaba, also known as the Wicked Witch of the West, is faced with a challenge, retrieving the shoes that her sister promised her from Dorothy Gale, a young girl whose house crash-landed in Oz from parts unknown.

Magic

General

• Madame Morrible, a witch, notes Elphaba's internal power and force of will, which allow her to slightly resist her binding spell with no training in magic at all
  • Glinda, who had some training in sorcery and was likewise naturally gifted in magic, faints when she thinks about the spell Morrible cast on her
  • Elphaba manages to talk about Morrible slightly when Glinda can't

Ice

• Freezes lakewater underfoot as she runs across it to reach a small island in the center
• Subconsciously caused an icicle to fall and kill a boy who had locked her son in a well

Broom

• Flies from a mile above the ground to touch down on the top of a tree
• The broom moves towards Nor when she reaches for it
• Nor flies on the broom, though it listens to Elphaba when she tells it to come back down
• Flies from Kiamo Ko in the Vinkus to Colwen Grounds in Munchkinland in seven days

Animals

• Convinces a swarm of bees to travel with her
  • Subconsciously commanded the bees to kill a man
  • Commands bees to attack Dorothy and her companions

• Through a combination of sorcery and surgery, created winged monkeys
  • Has her flying monkeys grab Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion and bring them to Kiamo Ko

• Owns the Grimmerie, a book of spells which comes from the Wizard's world
  • Has a variety of spells on assassination
  • Has spells about how to tamper with the flow of time, poison water, breed a more docile population, and more
• As a child, looks into a looking glass and sees the arrival of the Wizard in Oz
• Creates a potion to prevent falling asleep
• Teaches a monkey to speak
  • Quick note on context: In Wicked there are animals and there are Animals, who are sapient animals capable of speech and reason. Chistery is a monkey not a Monkey, but Elphaba manages to get him to talk
