How to stay protected and make sure I get what I paid for?

I'm thinking of buying something from Facebook Marketplace but I would rather buy through Ebay so I know I'm not getting scammed.
The seller doesn't seem to be set up for Ebay.
Would it be too much to ask him to sell using Ebay?
His price sounds a little too good to be true.
I want to make sure I'm not getting scammed and if I am I will get my money back from Ebay.
