My wife and I have been workshopping the idea of living together with other remote workers in a community that is essentially run as a council or commune. We like the idea of collectively putting together the funds to buy a piece of property or even a cheap island. It could be a mini-economy of remote workers, with each person contributing their unique skills to the community while also doing their regular work. It would be very Rousseau-esque, differentiating ourselves as a new way to live. Nothing religious or kooky. Just people with a desire to separate themselves from the craziness of modern societies without having to give up their financial independence. The world has become very restrictive, and creating something that is (for once) specifically designed for and by remote workers would be a really great step in the right direction.
We think that much of the world is already moving in a direction in which people will need to live and work together more and more (as they did in the past) just to survive. Houses aren't affordable for most people anymore. To get ahead, people need to band together. And this is something that has been normal for centuries, but we think it needs to be brought back so that the "average" person can still prosper and thrive, while also getting the benefits of a community to which they can belong, contribute, and have a vested interest. Ideally, it could even be a community where arts, fashion, and other aspects of human culture could flourish in a wholly unique way.
Since we see this as a very long-term project, we think it might be best to live together in a chateau (they are very accessible, especially with pooled funds) or a similarly accommodating house in Europe. From there, we can begin hammering out the details of our community and put together the funds to buy the property or island where we can begin to settle (many Greek islands are quite affordable, for example). This would give us time to get to know each other and make by-laws for the community. I know it may sound a little far-fetched to some, but I really think that it could be a great place for freelancers and remote workers to have a strong sense of community and a social life (since many of us are so detached from the rest of the world), and be part of something bigger without having to give up remote work. Let me know what you guys think!
P.S. I know it's a big undertaking with a lot of moving parts to consider, but much more complex things have been accomplished! And there is a lot of excitement and pride in creating something completely new and perhaps even historical :)
