Just picked this game up a couple days ago - what's the state of online play?

I believe I'm almost done with the campaign. Wanted to beat it solo and get a solid feel for the game before rerolling and trying coop.
Does anyone have any good experiences with public matchmaking, or would you recommend trying to find coop partners through other means? (like this subreddit for example)
Also, when it comes to gear/trait levels, is there a decent variety of players online, or are most players somewhat "maxed out"?
